“How does an NFT issuer hosting an event authenticate those attendees are legitimate token holders?”
Well, let me tell you my story…
How I Discovered Fraud In Events Attendance…
In 2007 I became a professional nightclub DJ working 4-5 nights per week.
Part of that role was also nightclub promoting.
We used 3 metrics to grow our club nights:
1. Ingress;
2. Egress; and
3. Loyalty.
“IEL” for short.
Ingress is the action of going in or entering.
Egress is the action of going out of or leaving.
Loyalty is the action of regular support.
We’d try to maximize ingress and loyalty and try to minimize egress.
Get those three right, and you have a successful event.
One of the tools we’d use to maximize ingress was invite previous patrons back…
“If you want people to come to your party, you need to invite them.”
Seems pretty simply, right!?
Yet very few venues do this, even today.
Because people always have their phone on them at nightclubs (how are you going to get dates?!), we’d collect phone numbers at the door in exchange for an incentive, then send an SMS after the event inviting patrons back the week after to redeem that incentive at the venue.
It worked extremely well.
What people ended up doing was screenshotting or forwarding the SMS to their friends, so their friends would also get the incentive.
We knew this would happen and we didn’t care because it led to our goal: more event ingress.
Plus, at the door we’d ask the friend with had a “fraudulent” SMS if they’d like to signup themselves (as all were eligible) and they would: we get even more event loyalty that way.
The problem was, this was 2007 and phone apps were not sophisticated enough, so we had to sign people up via paper forms.
This was:
1. Hard for us to read during data entry process after the event;
2. Time consuming to data entry after the event;
3. Fraught with mistakes in data entry after the event due to legibility;
4. A slow user experience in the line when they want to party; and
5. So on…
Fast Forward To 22 July 2020…
In South Australia, as part of the reopening of COVID-19 restrictions, all venues needed a “COVID Management Plan” under the Emergency Management legislation.
The legislation mandated venue obtain and retain each patron/attendee’s contact details for potential contact tracing.
The Australian Public health departments suggested a paper form to do this, but that added physical distribution, collection and storage element as well.
On top of trying to get back-to-business, this is a lot of administration burden to venues.
So, I created a contactless, paperless solution using QR codes for venue to meet this compliance requirement without pen and paper.
7 Months Later…
However, on 1 December 2020, the South Australian Government and SA Heath mandated the use of a similar check-in system – their system.
They legislated me out of the market.
No tears!
I was able to solve the original hospitality problem outline above: recording in-person attendance into a database without data entry, while speeding up user experience.
In September 2021, I made a prediction that we'll all eventually be wearing unique QR codes, likely as bracelets.
Come 19 October 2021…
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade launched what they called “the international ‘gold standard’ of proof of vaccination”.
That being, an International COVID-19 Vaccination certificate with a QR code “which is generated using the COVID-19 vaccination information in the Australian Immunisation Register” and passport details.
When the QR code is scanned it displays text in a programming language called JSON, a form of JavaScript that can be read across arrange of different applications.
If you decode the JSON text in that COVID-19 Vaccination certificate it has someone’s vital details in it, including a unique vaccine certificate identifier.
No doubt this is linked to a global database to verify that the unique vaccine certificate identifier matches your name to prevent fraud.
If that's the case, it will be quite difficult to make counterfeit International COVID-19 Vaccination certificates.
All of the potential drama that a bunch of cyber security experts said could happen is likely beat-up.
This confirmed my prediction a month earlier!
Extrapolating from that, when all our concert tickets are purchased as NFTs, we'll have a QR code or equivalent that gets scanned it at venue entrances to verify we own the ticket.
And that is how I believe the world of events will be going.
Enter NFT Attendee™…
How I Turned This Prediction Into NFT Attendee™…
My name is Orren Prunckun and I am an Adelaide-based innovator, who amongst many other things, lectures at university level in innovation and I have built the world’s first petrol price predictor.
So, taking all the learnings outline above, I created a product called NFT Attendee™…
For token holders, it’s a fast user experience to redeem physical benefits of the token in-person.
For ERC-721 token issuers (event hosts), the utility redeemable token is matched between the in-person user and the Ethereum or Polygon blockchain then checked-off for your internal records.
Fraudulent in-person redemption is impossible – your staff watch the token holder pull up their NFT wallet to be scanned…
How NFT Attendee™ Works…
1. The token issuer creates an NFT Attendee™ account;
2. The token issuer edits their profile by adding their ERC-721 token contract address, contract address blockchain network and any redeemable in-person utilities;
3. The token issuer saves their updated profile; and
4. NFT Attendee™ finds the issuing token contract address on the on the Ethereum or Polygon blockchains..
At the token redemption venue or event check-in registration desk, in front of your door staff or maître d' (to ensure the QR code being presented is real and not a screenshot):
5. The token holder opens any mobile NFT wallet;
6. The token holder navigates to their token holding account in their mobile NFT wallet;
7. The token holder taps “receive” to open the wallets QR code;
Then…
8. On mobile, your door staff or maître d' opens the already logged in NFT Attendee™ software;
9. Your door staff or maître d' taps “Scan NFT Holders” and the proprietary QR code reader in NFT Attendee™ opens;
10. Your door staff or maître d' scans the token holder’s mobile NFT wallet QR code with the proprietary QR code reader in NFT Attendee™;
11. Your door staff or maître d' taps “Enter Matching Token Number!” in NFT Attendee™;
12. Your door staff or maître d' verbally asks the token holder for the token number of their NFT;
13. Your door staff or maître d' enters the token number into NFT Attendee™ and taps “Check Ownership!”
14. NFT Attendee™ verifies ownership on the Ethereum or Polygon blockchains;
15. If ownership can be verified, your door staff or maître d' taps “Redeem Token!”;
16. The holding wallet address and token number is stored in the NFT Attendee™ database so the token issuer any potential future buyers of a token can access; and
17. Repeat 5-16 for each attendee or patron.
Better yet, try the live demo here with any ERC-721 token! You'll need 2x smartphones - 1 to use this link and the other with a crypto wallet containing an NFT and QR code to the wallet address.
What You Get With The NFT Attendee™ Software...
• Ethereum and Polygon blockchain compatible, so can choose the ideal chain to mint your redeemable utility token on, which means you have flexibility in verifying redemption.
• Match token, ERC-721 contract & wallet against blockchains, so you can verify legitimate token ownership, which means fraudulent redemption is impossible.
• Add, update & delete unlimited ERC-721 contract addresses, so you can have multiple redeemable utility tokens, which means only one NFT Attendee™ account is required.
• Add, update & delete unlimited redeemable utilities, so you can have multiple redeemable utilities, which means you are not locked into the utilities you offer.
• Free software updates for the life of your subscription, so you have access to the latest algorithm changes, which means future low petrol price prediction will be better optimized.
• SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), so you can be confident that your data is encrypted, which means your personal details are safe.
• Publicly accessible redemption database, so you can allow your current token holder and prospective secondary market token holders view redemption of utilities, which means those token holders are best informed to make a NFT buying decision.
• Search database by token Number, so you can allow your current token holder and prospective secondary market token holders view redemption of utilities on specific tokens, which means those token holders are best informed to make a NFT buying decision.
• Database redemption timestamped to token holding, so you can allow your current token holder and prospective secondary market token holders view real-time redemption of all utilities, which means those token holders are best informed to make a NFT buying decision.
